How do I create passkeys? (web)

What are passkeys?

We now support Fast Identity Online (FIDO) passkeys as a two-factor authentication method. Passkeys allow you to enjoy password-free login without authentication codes. It's the most secure option to protect your account, and you can use your biometrics or a USB security key to log in.

Once the passkey feature is activated, at least one passkey must always remain linked to the account. You can reset the existing passkey or add a new one before removing any passkeys you no longer wish to keep.

Create a passkey

1. Before you create a passkey, make sure you at least have:

   • A device with Windows 10 or macOS Ventura, or

   • A USB security key that supports the FIDO2 protocol

2. Make sure you're using a FIDO-supported browser with:

   • Chrome 109 or above

   • Safari 16 or above

   • Edge 109 or above

3. Log in to your account at okx.com and go to Profile > Security

4. Find Passkeys in the security center and select Set up

5. Select Enable passkeys and complete the security verification

6. Select one of the available options to create your passkey:

• Create with this device

• Use another device or physical key

Create with this device

• Select This Device and complete the biometric authentication/PIN code on your device

Use another device or physical key

• Select USB security key

  • Insert your security key and follow the instructions to create your passkey

• Select A different device

  • Scan the QR code using your mobile device or tablet's native QR code scanner and complete the authentication on your device

Verify with passkey

Here's how you can verify your passkey once you have enabled the feature:

1. You'll be prompted to use passkey for verification via biometrics (for example, Touch ID on a Mac)

3. Alternatively, you can select Cancel and use your password instead

1. You'll be prompted to verify using a passkey on another device

2. Scan the QR code with your other device to complete the verification

Note: to ensure a smoother user experience during passkey verification, we suggest using Chrome or Safari. Using different browsers will lead to a slightly different user experience.

Rename passkey

You can go to Profile > Security > Security center > Passkeys > Manage to rename your passkey to help you identify it easily.

Note: changing the passkey name will only affect the OKX passkey management page. If you prefer to change the device name directly, you have the option to edit it during login by accessing Manage Devices > Linked Devices within the Chrome browser.

Reset or remove passkey

As a security precaution, resetting or removing a passkey may trigger a 24-hour restriction on withdrawals and P2P trading:

• If you reset your passkey, the restriction will apply automatically.

• If you remove a passkey without using another passkey to verify (e.g. using 2FA or facial verification instead), the 24-hour restriction will apply.

Reset passkey

If you only have 1 passkey linked to your account, you'll only see the Reset option. This is because your account must always have at least 1 passkey. When you reset it, you'll replace your current passkey with a new one during the process.

To reset your passkey:

1. Go to Profile > Security > Security Center > Passkeys > Manage

2. Select Reset and complete the verification process. You may be asked to complete facial verification using your mobile device

3. Once verified, you'll be prompted to add a new passkey and follow the on-screen instructions

Remove passkey

You can remove a passkey only if you have more than one set up. If your account already has 10 passkeys, you'll need to remove one before adding a new one.

To remove a passkey:

1. Select Remove next to the passkey you want to delete

2. Complete the verification process to confirm the removal

Note: removing your passkeys may potentially lower the security level of your account. It is highly recommended to consider the associated risks before proceeding.
