VILO-VILO is an artistic world created by the artist Kyotaro Aoki (KYOTARO) in the year 2000. Debuting at their first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000, VILO-VILO made a comeback after 21 years in 2021. Kyotaro Aoki’s VILO-VILO is fun and peaceful— “A world where everything exists and yet nothing exists.” A world beyond understanding, a new world. Thank you. VILO-VILO Lines and shapes lurking deep in the subconscious, characters existing within them, laughing and playing together. A texture, a space, an atmosphere that cannot exist in the material world—yet, it exists. Expressing freely— That feels important. Expressing a world that feels true to oneself— That feels important. The meaning comes after painting. What I feel now becomes the painting. There are times when the real world feels exhausting, when joy fades away, when sadness takes over. Searching for a joyful world led me here. I want to enjoy it. And if someone else finds it enjoyable, that makes me happy. Once I start painting, I strive to create something new. When displayed, it transforms the space into something strange and whimsical. But ultimately, I paint simply because I enjoy it. I want to paint more. A wonderfully funny and curious world, a peaceful world for everyone. VILO-VILO is a world where nothing exists and everything exists. That’s all there is to it. KYOTARO 青木京太郎
